The Gnasher is a normal unique 
Hand Axe found in Diablo 2 Resurrected.
The Gnasher is carried through early Normal for its 20% Chance of Crushing Blow, which removes a share of the target's current life on each hit. That scales with the monster's health pool rather than with the axe's damage, which is what makes it so effective against bosses. The 50% Chance of Open Wounds adds bleed damage and stops the target from regenerating life, and the +8 to Strength covers the requirement of armor and shields well above the character's level.
Deathspade becomes available at level 9 with far more raw damage, but nothing that replaces Crushing Blow, so The Gnasher stays the better option against high-life targets for a while after the swap looks obvious.

When upgrading The Gnasher to a Hatchet the level requirement will increase to level 24.
